Teaching & Mentoring

I believe computing education should be human-centered, engaging, and accessible. Through hands-on learning and mentorship, I help students build confidence, explore research early, and grow as innovators and problem-solvers. I create opportunities that extend beyond the classroom into research, conferences, competitions, and professional development.

My goal is not simply to teach students how to use technology, but to empower them to create technology that makes a difference.

Courses taught

In my courses, I incorporate project-based learning, game-based learning, design thinking, and culturally responsive teaching practices to connect computing concepts to real-world experiences. Activities such as the Culture Box encourage students to share their identities and experiences, building a sense of community and belonging. Collaborative challenges, such as the Marshmallow Challenge, introduce students to teamwork, creative problem-solving, rapid prototyping, and the importance of learning through iteration.

Mentoring students

I mentor student researchers in the HAX Lab and advise computer science students across the department, traveling with them to hackathons, conferences, and career events such as BE Smart, AfroTech, and NSBE. Alumni have gone on to Google, Bloomberg, American Airlines, John Hancock, and Johns Hopkins APL, and to graduate study at Emory University and the University of Alabama.

2026 Excellence in Student Success AwardMorgan State Department of Computer ScienceRecognized for outstanding advising and mentorship, and for creating opportunities for students to take part in research, hackathons, professional conferences, and other hands-on learning.

Competing against teams from 13 other HBCUs, they presented at the final showcase at Apple in Austin, Texas, and won national first place and the $35,000 grand prize. As the team's faculty advisor, I guided their project development and helped them prepare to present their work on a national stage.

From 2023 through 2026, I also founded and directed the CEAMLS Summer AI Research Institute (SAIRI), where undergraduate teams worked with graduate and faculty mentors on AI research each summer. Learn more about SAIRI
